Thanksgiving Rolls with My Grandson

Thanksgiving Rolls with My Grandson

Four years old going on thirty,
He wants to know everything,
He knows a lot,
More beyond his years,
He feels emotions deeply,
When we made rolls for Thanksgiving,
We were in our pajamas,
(Rolls start early for a noon time meal),
We want to count the cups of flour,
He was perfect,
Seven to stir,
And, three more to knead,
Perfect,
He would count backwards,
He will make a fine replacement for his Grandpa,
In the roll making “business”,
This makes me happy!

Aunt Lois Van Cleve (A Tribute)

Aunt Lois Van Cleve
(A Tribute)

Blood is blood,
Memories,
I knew your smile,
I felt your hug,
You were our aunt,
You cared to send letters,
Handwritten letters,
You knew us as family,
I always loved your smile,
I played golf with your husband,
I saw you with our little son,
Connecting, and down on your knees,
Bending to meet him at his level,
You traveled to visit us,
You poured out your life for our family,
We never traveled as much as you did,
But, we will travel up for your funeral today,
We are trying to touch base,
We love you,
Aunt Lois!

Our Pond

Our Pond

You took your shoes off,
Silly me,
I stared,
Not used to that,
We found our spot,
Our pond,
We sat,
We stared,
At the lily pads,
We said some day,
We will find a place,
Like this,
Until then,
This is the end of our walk,
A place of peace,
Our pond!

My Brother John

My Brother John

My Brother John is my hero,
Always was, and always will be,
Very much alive and thriving,
He was better at everything,
Strength,
Grades,
Athletics,
Goodness,
My Hero,
We were paperboys together,
Oh, yah,
Chicago Tribune,
Every morning at 5 a.m.,
Paper drop,
John was on top of it,
He shook me,
Get up!
He broke the twine,
Rolling and putting the rubber bands on,
He rolled two (easily) to my one,
Come on,
Get going,
Always athletic,
We smoked as teenagers
(We don’t anymore),
We pushed and fought,
And, fished together,
We knew girls,
We never shared what should not be shared,
Gentlemen,
We were raised as gentlemen,
But, we were men,
We were raised to be men,
Never strike a blow,
Never strike a blow, first,
If someone hits you,
Don’t let him forget you came to defend yourself,
My brother and I,
Didn’t have to worry too much,
About this stuff,
We were tough enough,
And, John,
We have through some tough time
But, you are a tough guy,
John,
Was and is my hero!

Bed Time

Bed Time

“I am tired”,
(I am not),
“I am going to bed”
“Good night, Sweetie!”
There is a night time to be spent between now and morning,
Assess the day,
OK,
(We could spend an eon on that day),
But, bed time,
Without divulging,
There are swirls of emotion,
And, every desire imagined,
Wars and women,
Conquered,
(And, why would I be among the conquerors,
Because I am just dreaming)
Novels read,
Movies seen,
But, I am a lover,
The committee in my head says,
Sublimate,
It’s OK,
You are a good guy,
You are not Sin Bad,
You are not Black Beard,
You are not Captain Hook,
I like to read about the bad guys,
That’s as far as I get,
That’s as far as you get, too,
I’m tired,
I’m going to bed soon,
I have a great book I am going to read tomorrow,
What, are you doing for breakfast?

I Love You

I Love You

How many times have I said,
“I love you,”
A lot, I would imagine,
But, today is a new day,
I haven’t said those words today,
I see you sitting in a chair,
Reading a book,
Two cats lounging,
One on the height of your chair,
And, one in your lap,
They love you, too,
But, not like me,
We are so lucky,
I see my young girl sitting there,
Its late fall,
You have your blanket,
Woolen socks,
A book,
Two cats,
Oh, my,
I love you!
